November 3, 2021 • Utrecht, Netherlands

A year and a half overdue (but better late than never), Nara Kasbergen and Louis Kwon are finally coming to you on their wedding tour! We look forward to welcoming you and your guest(s) to The Anthony Hotel Utrecht at 4:30pm for a celebratory happy hour and dinner. The dress code is business casual or cocktail attire.

Venue

We’re excited to celebrate our marriage with you at The Anthony Hotel, a fully renovated former Utrecht monastery from 1908 that belonged to the opposite Sint Antoniuskerk — the perfect combination of old and new. In addition to the beautiful stained glass windows and classical ambience with modern furnishings, we’re looking forward to being able to hold a truly private party — an important element in the age of COVID.

Our evening will begin with drinks and bar bites at 4:30pm on their private roof terrace (weather permitting) or their bar. Dinner will commence at 6pm inside their chapel, followed by another hour of drinks from 8–9pm. (Unfortunately, the party must end by 9pm to respect the surrounding hotel rooms' quiet hours.) We hope everyone will join us at least for dinner; the drinks before and after are optional, schedules permitting.

For dinner, we’ll be enjoying a 3-course meal with accompanying wine pairings. The actual selection of dishes will depend on what’s in season at the time. The restaurant can account for any allergies and diets (such as vegetarian or gluten-free) as long as they are notified in advance, so don’t forget to indicate your dietary restrictions when you RSVP.

Parking

The Anthony Hotel has its own parking lot, but it is quite pricey (€20 per night) and it is recommended to book in advance as there is not always space available. There is also paid street parking nearby.

A better option is the Kop van Lombok parking garage. It’s just over a 5-minute walk away, open 24 hours a day, and the cost is a lot more reasonable: €2.94 an hour, €7.34 for an evening ticket (7pm – 12am), and the maximum daily rate is €14.30.

If at all possible, we advise you to travel using public transportation, it is a lot easier than parking in the city.

Public Transit

The venue is located just a 12-minute walk (1km) from NS Station Utrecht Centraal. Exit the station using the Noordertunnel toward Van Sijpesteijnkade, turn left toward Kanaalstraat, and from there it’s a straight shot down Kanaalstraat. The venue will be on your right.

Nearly all cities in The Netherlands have trains that go to Utrecht CS, and virtually all Utrecht city buses and the tram stop there as well, making this an ideal location for guests using public transportation.

Hotel

One benefit of moving our celebration location to The Anthony Hotel is that our guests are able to book rooms in their accommodations, whether you’re traveling from far or just want to enjoy yourselves without having to appoint a designated driver. You can book a room using their portal here.

Celebration

A few other miscellaneous details about how we expect the evening to go:

Aside from the happy hours before and after, this is primarily a celebratory dinner (and in true European style, we expect this 3-course meal to take a couple of hours). As you have hopefully understood by now, there will not be a ceremony; Nara is not walking down the aisle. (She will, however, be wearing a wedding dress because she figures you’ll want to have your picture taken with her.) We’re not doing a ceremony in Washington, DC either, so no one is missing out! None of these is the “real” wedding any more than the other.

There is no room for a dance floor at the venue, so no need to wear your dancing shoes. We will all be seated at one or two long tables, but the two of us will try to spend some time with all our guests. We would greatly prefer no lengthy speeches, though you are allowed to make a toast.

We are planning to have an official photographer, so we encourage you to wear festive, business casual or cocktail attire. (We do understand most of you will be coming straight from work, so we’re not expecting folks to show up in full formal/evening wear.) We’re not sure yet if we’ll do official family portraits or mostly candids, but we would love to get a photo with each of you before you leave.

Although there are a few fun bars in the neighborhood that we could hypothetically adjourn to after we conclude our time at The Anthony by 9pm, the two of us will in all likelihood be too tired for an “after-party” (and Nara is not that mobile in her big wedding dress). However, if you are so inclined, we encourage you to have a good time in our absence, and drink another toast to us while we shuffle off to bed.

COVID–19 Precautions

We ourselves are not among those who think the pandemic is completely over, and we did not take the decision to hold our event lightly; we do not want to callously endanger the health of our relatives. We do believe it is possible to throw this party safely if everyone agrees to the following conditions:

  • All guests must be fully vaccinated against COVID–19 (except children too young to be vaccinated), AND
  • All guests (including children) must take a rapid antigen test either the day of or the day before the party

Please take note of the AND — yes, we are asking you to get tested even if you are already vaccinated. We realize this generally goes against the Dutch government’s advice, where simply being vaccinated is enough to attend most events, but in the U.S. we are much more wary of breakthrough cases. In fact, at our wedding party in D.C., we required all of our guests to be fully vaccinated, and yet afterwards, one of our guests still developed mild symptoms and tested positive for COVID–19. So, breakthrough cases are real and can happen, and we are very mindful of that risk. This is why we are asking everyone to take a rapid antigen test (not a PCR test), ideally same day as the party: antigen tests are very good at detecting whether you are actively infectious, even if you are not symptomatic.

You should be able to take a rapid antigen test for free using Testen voor Toegang — if you’ve got Wednesday afternoon off, you could even take advantage by going to the testing location at Utrecht CS before making your way to The Anthony Hotel. We will also accept the self-tests sent out by the Dutch government in August, or any drugstore test. Please take a photo of your negative test result and WhatsApp it to Debby or Joyce, or email it to Nara.

At this time, it is unclear whether you will be required to use the CoronaCheck app to enter the venue or not; when the horeca requirement went into effect on September 25th, Rutte said they would reevaluate the policy after five weeks, so it is possible that this requirement will expire right before our event takes place. However, we recommend that everyone plan for the possibility that you will need to be able to present a QR code at the entry to the venue and make all of the necessary arrangements.

We will not require anyone to wear masks during the party, but we would encourage anyone traveling to and from the venue using public transportation to strongly consider wearing a mask, no matter what the Dutch government says (it is always a good idea to mask up when in an enclosed space with many strangers). If you are in need of high-quality masks, please let us know; we will be bringing lots of Korean KF94 masks with us and can mail you some the week before the party as needed.

R.S.V.P.

When we sent out our original invitations in early 2020, we included a pre-addressed R.S.V.P. postcard — however, this time around, since we rescheduled our event on relatively short notice, we are asking you to R.S.V.P. electronically to expedite the process. Here is the link to the form. Please R.S.V.P. again by October 20th, even if you did so for our original March 2020 event — we know some folks' availability has changed, so we’d like everyone to check in.

Registry

We’re lucky to already have a home full of everything we need (and no room left for anything else), so in lieu of a registry with material things, we’re raising money for our dream honeymoon in Australia, as well as the travel costs associated with our wedding tour. You can find our registry on Honeyfund. Note that while our honeymoon was also postponed, we are still planning to make the trip as soon as Australia reopens to international travellers — currently we are aiming for October 2022.
